Training
1986: graduated in Medicine at the University of Brescia with 110/110 cum laude. The thesis was published in Behavioral Brain Resarch
1990: specialized in Neurology at the University of Parma. The thesis was published in Stroke
1993, 1994, 1996: training in epidemiology at the School of Public Health, Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD
1998: sabbatical in population epidemiology at the Department of Geriatrics, Karolinska Institute (head: Bengt Winblad) as a Visiting Scientist

Clinical work
1985-1990: residency in Neurology, University in Brescia, head Luigi A. Vignolo
1991-1999: staff neurologist at the Alzheimer's Unit, Sacro Cuore Fatebenefratelli Hospital, Brescia, Italy, the first Italian Alzheimer Clinic. Head of the Day Hospital, a clinical diagnostic and rehabilitation service with 15 patients daily.

Teaching activity
Has given a number of lectures in CME courses devoted to general practitioners and specialists (among which those of the National Academy of Medicine). He is currently professor of Clinical Epidemiology at the University of Insubria, Varese.

Present occupation
1999-to date: head of the Laboratory of Epidemiology and Neuroimaging, IRCCS San Giovanni di Dio, Sacro Cuore Fatebenefratelli Hospital, Brescia, Italy, a research facilty with about 12 between senior researchers and fellows. The IRCCS San Giovanni di Dio is the only Italian facility funded by the National Health System to do research and provide advanced care to patients with Alzheimer’s disease (IRCCS – Scientific Institute of Research and Care).


Research activity

Author of more than 100 publications indexed in Medline, 200 meeting communications, and 25 books and book chapters. Referee since 1994 for the Journal of Neurology Neurosurgery and Psychiatry, Journal of Neurology, Alzheimer Disease and Associated Disorders, Aging: Clinical and Experimental Research, Journal of the International Neuropsychological Society, Italian Journal of Neurological Sciences, and Giornale di Gerontologia. Member of the editorial board of The Lancet Neurology. Scientific coordinator of a EU-funded study (SCUD project: The Special Care Units for Demented: a Controlled Study of Effectiveness, 1997-98) and of a NHS-funded multicenter study (Italian Normative Database of Brain MR-Morphometry – Age 40+).
The main topics of scientific intereset have been: interaction of genotype with phenotype in the degenerative dementias (mainly apoE), in vivo neurobiology of Alzheimer disease and frontotemporal dementia with magnetic resonance imaging, population epidemiology of mild cognitive impairment, the biological basis of delusions and other behavioral disturbances in dementia, and imaging tools for the routine diagnosis of Alzheimer’s.
